Hormone Therapy Impact: Prostate Cancer Survey
A mixed-methods study exploring hormone therapy experiences and symptom burden in prostate cancer
Challenges
High Treatment Burden
Hormone therapy (HT) is a key treatment for prostate cancer but can cause significant side effects that affect patients’ quality of life.
Limited Real-world Patient Insights
Limited patient-reported evidence was available on the prevalence and impact of HT-related symptoms in patients’ daily lives.
Gaps in Patient Support
Limited understanding of how effectively patients are supported with information and management of treatment-related symptoms.
Objectives & Endpoints
Treatment-Related Side Effects
Compare the prevalence and severity of key side effects among patients receiving HT versus non-HT treatments.
Impact on Patients
Assess the impact of HT-related symptoms on patients’ daily lives and quality of life.
Patient Support & Information
Evaluate patients’ understanding of treatment options, information sources, and HCP support for managing treatment-related symptoms.
Our Approach
Survey Development & Expert Input
Designed the patient survey with input from KOLs, including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, to capture treatment experiences, symptom burden, and patient support needs.
Patient Outreach
Conducted an online survey targeting prostate cancer patients in the USA and Germany.
Qualitative Patient Follow-up
Extended the research with 10 patient interviews (5 per country) to explore treatment experiences, side-effect management, and unmet needs.
Key Findings
Significant HT Symptom Burden: HT was associated with substantially higher symptom burden, particularly impact on sex life, lack of energy, and hot flushes.
Additional Burden with ARPI Therapy: Fatigue, body shape/weight changes, and sleep disturbances were more frequent among patients receiving HT with ARPI therapy.
Major Support Gap: 39.4% of patients experiencing HT-related symptoms received no support from their doctors.
Business Impact & Outcomes
Unmet Support Needs: Identified a significant gap in HCP support for managing HT-related symptoms, highlighting opportunities for more targeted patient support.
Information & Engagement: Patients preferred HCPs but also relied on digital channels, highlighting opportunities for trusted online education.
Scientific Dissemination: Presented findings at a Scientific Congress, contributing to evidence and awareness around the patient impact of hormone therapy.
