Patient & Treatment Insights: Stroke & Spasticity
An online patient survey exploring Botox treatment adherence, treatment experiences, and awareness among patients with stroke and spasticity
Challenges
Understanding Treatment Adherence
Limited insight into Botox treatment continuation and discontinuation among patients with stroke and spasticity.
Identifying True Completers
Needed to identify patients who had experienced stroke and spasticity and received Botox treatment, within a relatively small target population.
Understanding Discontinuation Drivers
Limited understanding of why patients discontinue Botox treatment and the factors influencing treatment persistence.
Objectives & Endpoints
Botox Treatment Experience
Assess patients’ Botox treatment history, continuation, and discontinuation.
Treatment Persistence
Understand factors influencing adherence and reasons for stopping Botox treatment, including efficacy and side effects.
Patient & Treatment Landscape
Explore severity of spasticity, current treatment approaches, and awareness of Botox as a treatment option.
Our Approach
Patient Survey Co-Creation
Co-created a short German-language patient survey focused on Botox treatment adherence and experiences.
Digital Patient Recruitment
Conducted an online campaign in Germany to recruit patients with stroke and spasticity.
Targeted Patient Qualification
Screened respondents to identify “true completers” — patients with stroke and spasticity who had received Botox treatment.
Key Findings
Lower-than-Expected Discontinuation: Only 20% of Botox-treated patients discontinued treatment, substantially below the 60% expected based on client data.
Awareness & Treatment Discussion Gaps: More than 80% of untreated patients were unaware of Botox as a treatment option, and many reported it had never been discussed with their physician.
Key Discontinuation Drivers: Lack of efficacy and side effects were the main reasons reported for discontinuing Botox treatment.
Business Impact & Outcomes
Adherence Insights: Generated patient-level insights into Botox treatment persistence and discontinuation drivers among patients with stroke and spasticity.
Validated Recruitment Feasibility: Identified 39 Botox-treated patients through digital recruitment, indicating that the target population could be reached online.
Identified Awareness Gaps: Highlighted opportunities to improve patient and physician awareness of Botox as a treatment option for focal spasticity.
