Patient Engagement and HRQoL: Prostate Cancer Survey
A digital survey exploring patient experiences, treatment engagement, and HRQoL in prostate cancer in Japan
Challenges
Understanding Regional Differences
Limited evidence on how the Japanese patient experience differs from Western prostate cancer populations.
Understanding Patient Experiences
Limited insight into how patients with prostate cancer in Japan experience their treatment journey, symptoms, and quality of life.
Identifying Engagement Gaps
Needed to better understand patient involvement in treatment decisions, access to information, and engagement with support organizations.
Objectives & Endpoints
Quality of Life
Evaluate the impact of symptoms and patient engagement on HRQoL and compare findings with Western populations.
Patient Treatment Journey
Understand patients’ experiences with diagnosis, treatment, information access, and decision-making.
Patient Engagement & Support
Assess participation in treatment decisions, understanding of treatment options, and engagement with patient organizations.
Our Approach
Digital Survey Design
Designed and conducted an online survey assessing diagnosis, disease status, treatment, and symptoms. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy–Prostate (FACT-P) questionnaire.
Targeted Digital Recruitment
Recruited patients and caregivers through Yahoo! Japan, Facebook, Instagram, and patient organization channels.
Key Findings
Engaged Patients Reported Better Outcomes: Patients with greater understanding of their disease and treatment and higher treatment participation showed better HRQoL and less treatment regret.
Limited Treatment Participation: Compared with Western countries, more Japanese patients reported no treatment-decision involvement, mainly due to trust in doctors.
Symptoms Impacting HRQoL: Although urinary and sexual symptoms were most common, nausea and fatigue had the greatest impact on HRQoL.
Business Impact & Outcomes
Identified Engagement Opportunities: Highlighted opportunities to strengthen patient education, treatment involvement, and support.
International Benchmarking: Enabled comparison of Japanese patient experiences with Western populations, supporting tailored patient engagement strategies.
Scientific Dissemination: Generated evidence to better understand the unique needs and treatment experiences of Japanese prostate cancer patients.
